True to our annual tradition, we spent the 4th of July week-end in the small town of Cedar City, Utah with the Utterback clan. We had a great time visiting and creating such fun hometown memories....

Tonight was the last game of coach pitch little league. Collin played for the NY Yankees with his friends Easton, Jedidiah and Braden. The team really improved as the season progressed and all the boys had a great time. Coach Jim was amazingly patient with 13 hyper boys. Collin had some great plays and nice power hits. His favorite position was catcher (just like his dad).

The trip was quite enjoyable. It has been two years since my last visit and I had a wonderful time "footing" it around the beautifully unique City by the Bay. Having grown up on both sides of the Bay Area, I consider San Francisco to be my home away from home.

Our Painted Lady Butterflies

This past Christmas, Garrett's sister Carrie gave Claire one of the coolest gifts: a butterfly habitat complete with live caterpillars and food. We watched in amazement this spring as all 10 caterpillars ate and ate and ate and finally formed chrysalides. The metamorphosis to the beautiful painted lady butterflies was truly a sight. Today, Collin and Claire released our "pet" butterflies in our front yard so they could live in our trees. Here are just a few of the photos of that event. Just check out the sheer joy and amazement in their faces. I love it!

Diamondback Gymnastics Spring Meet

Claire competed in her first gymnastics meet this

week-end and did a great job. She is still a little shy and was quite nervous but did very well, especially considering it was four hours!

She placed 3rd overall in her skill bracket and 1st in beam. She has been taking gymnastics for less than a year and is doing very well. Here are a couple of photos and a video clip of her award-winning beam routine.

On April 24th, Collin passed his belt exam in karate and became an orange belt. It generally takes 3-4 months to advance to the next belt. Collin has been practicing a lot these last few months and did an exceptional job on his exam. Here are a few of the highlights:

At the office....

Recently, the kids got to go to the office with Garrett, an outing that does not happen very often. They love to write on the white board, sit at his desk, check out the data center, conference rooms, talk to the security guards and, basically, pretend they are "at the office". I remember doing the same thing with my dad on a Saturday morning and returning home with several photocopies of my hands, a paper clip creation and a skip in my step knowing I had just spent the morning with my dad "at the office".

Happy Valentine's Day !

This year the kids chose to make their valentines. We searched the web and came up with these ideas. Despite the fact that it cost 5x the amount of store-bought valentines and took mom alot longer to die-cut and fold, the kids loved them and they had a great time distributing them to friends and classmates. Happy Valentine's Day!

Chihuahua Dreams....

Claire loves all small dogs, especially her Auntie Em's chihuahua Star. She desparately wants us to get a small dog so she can carry it around the house, dress it up and feed it food out of her tea set. The only problem is, most small dogs don't like Claire. Despite her best efforts, she is a big dog girl at the moment and most of her running, grabbing and speaking is too fast, big and loud for such tiny animals. This picture is one of the rare moments Star allowed Claire to hold her without clawing her way out of her arms.

My children do not know the meaning of "company manners". They use the time spent in "company" to show off their latest karate moves, fake burps, knock-knock jokes, cartwheels and, of course, fighting. Whenever we travel to visit family or friends, the amount of time Collin and Claire spend teasing, tattle-telling, hitting and sticking their tongues out is, at the very least, tripled. This Christmas vacation was no exception. My niece Brittany captured this moment at the park in my in-laws neighborhood. Sure, it looks like they are being silly and enjoying each other. Give it ten more seconds and one of them will burst into tears while the other chants "I'm sorry, I'm sorry" to hopefully not get "busted"....

Ornament Traditions

A favorite tradition I have continued from my childhood is the addition of a new ornament every year for each of my children. When they are big and grown and creating traditions of their own, they will have a couple dozen ornaments from their youth to start them off. My mother borrowed the idea from her dear friend Sue Ford, though I am fairly confident Sue has never relinquished the ornaments to any of her children, having grown too fond of them over the years! Of all the adorable ornaments I have collected, my childrens' favorite ornaments are the two I let them pick: Barbie Princess and the Pauper and Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. I know their future spouses will thank me....

Christmas came and went....

So much hustle and bustle, wrapping and decorating, caroling and baking, shopping and shipping...it is the funnest and most exhausting time of year. This year I purchased a "grove" of trees and arranged them in place of one tall tree. I made a tunnel for our train through the trees and the kids had a blast creating their mountain city and GI Joe base. Garrett complained so much about this great idea that we will not be repeating it next year. So as I was downloading my photos, I thought I would include the Christmas arrangement that will, sadly, never be repeated.

Duke, age 11 1/2

Duke is one year older and wiser. He enjoyed a full year

of travel, swimming, walks and playing at the park.

He lives for the times when the kids are home and loves

playing outside with them and all of their friends. He is

still crazy for tennis balls and loves to play catch and

swim. He dressed up as a hotdog this year for Halloween

(instead of his usual monkey) and enjoyed going

door-to-door "visiting" the neighbors. He adds an

element of delight and love to our lives and for that,

we love him dearly.

Garrett has been a busy traveler this year.

In 2009, he has visited the following states:

Hawaii, California, Washington, Nevada,

Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Illinois,

Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina,

Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, District

of Columbia, Nebraska, Massachusetts,

Texas, Florida, Delaware--I think that's all.

He went on his annual fishing trip to Yellowstone

and a couple of golf trips with friends.

He cheered and wept for the Cougar football program.

He coached Collin's little league team and

has learned a lot about karate.

It has been an exciting year, one that has passed all too

quickly. In 2009, I ran my first (and so far only)

half-marathon and also ran in the Ragnar Relay

(a no-fun 2-day 3-leg run). I also enjoyed July 4th in

Cedar City with my family and a couple of trips to

California to visit with Garrett's. Garrett and I went to

Washington DC with my sister, Carrie and her husband,

Eric. We also spent a week in Hawaii. I have been busy

volunteering at school, carpooling, reading, and spending

time with the kids on adventures.

It has been a blessed year....

A couple of weeks ago, Claire wanted to

dress herself and put on make-up.

This is not an unusual request.

Normally, she dons a princess dress-up

or ballet outfit, but this day was extra special.

On paper, it all should coordinate,

yet something is not quite right.

The navy blue sunflower shirt and navy blue
sunflower socks match (true)

The denim skirt does go with navy blue (true)

The green and white polka dot leggings
(hidden by the skirt) do coordinate with the
green around the sunflower (true)

And the sparkle silver eyeshadow does match

the sparkle silver shoes (true)

Where did it go wrong? For Claire, nowhere.

This is the ultimate in four year old fashion.

She is a trend-setting diva amongst her peers.

And yes, she has a mom who took her out for

a day of errands dressed like a beauty queen.

Child abuse or ultimate child love?

I guess it depends on how old you are.

Mr. Duke E. Pants

I have had several inquiries as to the whereabouts of

Mr. Duke E. Pants. Mr. Pants is still kicking.

At 10 1/2, he still loves his walks, playing at the park,

chasing the kids around, barking at the UPS man,

tennis balls and napping. I have stopped "coloring"

the gray hair around his mouth with a sharpie

because it just takes too much time now so he is

looking a little older, but still acts like a puppy.

He joins me on a couple of runs during the week and

has decided the roadrunner that scurries across our

back fence is worse than any cat. I snapped this photo

a few days ago. Duke still lives a better life than most

people and enjoys the creature comforts of being an

indoor dog to a family that loves him.

Garrett and I just celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary this week.

We cannot possibly be that old, which means that we got married at a barely legal age.

Christmas is coming...

We pulled into our neighborhood Sunday night, the last

day of November, and it looked like a tribute to

Christmas Vacation. Every house was lit with twinkle

lights, inflatable Santas and electric reindeer drinking

out of the riverscapes so popular here in Arizona

landscaping. Our kids' eyes lit up as we drove through

our Magical Winter Wonderland to our home. As we

turned the corner to our house, Collin's face fell into

disappointment as he noticed our completely dark house,

with not so much as an outdoor light on.

"Aren't we celebrating Christmas this year?"he asked us.

Though we had just returned from being in California

for over a week for Thanksgiving and a family wedding

AND it was still (technically) November, I did not have

the heart to tell him I had no plans of putting our

Christmas decorations up until the next week-end.

I found myself Monday morning waving good-bye to

Garrett as he left for Washington D.C. and getting the

boxes and boxes of Christmas decorations out of the

attic and highest shelves of the garage.

The things we do for love....

The First Catch

The kids finally wore Garrett down and he took the family fishing last week. We went to our local

Riparian Preserve armed with Dora and Spiderman fishing poles, an urban fishing license and worms.

Five minutes into the adventure I was already regretting the trip. All the kids wanted to do was cast

and reel it in (evidently it is hard to catch catfish if they never have a chance to bite the bait).

After a long hour and a half, I began packing it up. Garrett, however, was determined that the kids

would catch something to avoid the downtrodden expressions that were forming as they saw their

mom folding up the chairs. Garrett and Collin spied a small grouping of teensy fish just off the shore

and went for it. These pictures capture the momentous "first catch". You'll have to look hard for the fish.

Luckily, we were not relying on the adventure to supply us with dinner!

This is my first attempt at "blogging" so I'll make it short. I just thought I would post a couple of pictures

of the kids that were taken last month with their playgroup. Collin starts kindergarten in a couple

of months and will no longer be in a "playgroup". He and his friends have been in playgroup for three years.

I love this picture--grass stains, dirty feet and bruises says it all.
